Depending on your point of view, Christmas is either a quaint sonic time capsule extracted from the mid-1980s or a timeless holiday classic. The first in what has become an ongoing series of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas recordings, this CD has sold millions, which seems to indicate that it is everything its advertising claims it to be: "America's favorite Christmas music." The powerfully successful Mannheim Steamroller formula, conceived by group mastermind Chip Davis, involves a blend of Renaissance-flavored moods and instrumentation (strings, harpsichord, flute, French horn) intertwined with polite pop instrumental music. At times, the analog synthesizers used in this 1984 recording sound dated and a little cheesy, particularly on "Deck the Halls" and "Good King Wenceslas." But it is a forgivable offense since live instruments and the earnest but ersatz medieval atmosphere they evoke dominate 8 of the 11 tracks. As pleasant and soothing as a Willard Scott birthday wish, Christmas does offer one selection that truly merits "classic" status: the reverent, prayerful, slow-motion interpretation of "Silent Night" ("Stille Nacht") for piano and strings that closes the album--a beautiful and heart-touching work. The Daredevil soundtrack provided a nice boost for this previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas. Evanescence's songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear standouts in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the storyline. They reappear here on the band's debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists like Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music's sinister mood with evenhanded spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest. --Aidin Vaziri

Broken into six segments--Shadow Flyer, Canyon Carvers, A Matter of Time, Water's Gift, Canyon Voices, and Sudden Revelation--this reverent and staid view of the natural wonder that is Colorado's Grand Canyon results in a postcard-pretty film that quickly loses its impact. It sifts through a bland water, desert, and air approach to the natural monument and though in its first segment Canyon Dreams offers a glimpse into the architectural power of the place from the alien eye of a glider--which could be likened to a first glimpse at Mars--the prevailing shorts have little to offer that exalt the sandstone striations. Canyon Dreams opts to trivialize its subject, turning it into a Hallmark card rather than acting as a message-bearing warning: this spiritual sight could easily become an endangered species. What should be a strong reminder of our tenuous hold on the planet becomes a soothing pat on the head that complacently placates and massages the senses rather than incites viewers to feel or act. --Paula Nechak
